Safe Storage at Home

Sharps should always be stored in an approved sharps disposal container. These containers are designed to be puncture-resistant, leak-proof, and secure to reduce the risk of injury or exposure. Household containers such as soda bottles, milk jugs, or other plastic containers should not be used unless specifically approved, as they may not be puncture-resistant and can increase safety risks.

Safety Instructions

Used sharps should always be handled with caution to prevent injury or exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Never recap, bend, or break needles after use. Place sharps directly into an approved sharps container immediately after use.

When a sharps container is approximately three-quarters full, it should be securely closed and taken to an approved disposal location. Do not attempt to overfill containers.

If a needle-stick injury occurs, wash the area immediately with soap and water and seek medical guidance as appropriate. Do not attempt to squeeze or aggressively clean the wound.

Why It Matters

Proper sharps disposal helps prevent injuries, protects sanitation workers and the public, and reduces environmental contamination.
