Dog & Kennel Licenses

Individual dog licenses are issued by your local treasurer. To see a contact list for municipal treasurers, please CLICK HERE. The County Clerk’s office issues kennel licenses, and may assist the local treasurers with individual dog license sales.

Wisconsin State Statute Chapter 174 requires you to license your dog every year and pay the dog license fee if your dog is:

• More than 5 months old on January 1, or
• Turns 5 months old at any time during the license year.

You must also show proof from a licensed veterinarian of a current rabies vaccination for each dog.

Wisconsin State Statute 174.053 allows any person keeping more than one (1) dog to apply for a multiple dog license.

Individual dog license fees in Buffalo County (effective January 1, 2009) are $5.00 for a neutered male or spayed female, and $12.00 for an unneutered male or unspayed female. If your dog turns 5 months old after July 1 of the license year, the fee is half of the amounts above. Individual municipalities may set a different rate, so please check with your local treasurer.

Multiple dog license fees in Buffalo County (effective January 1, 2009) are $55.00 for 12 or fewer dogs. For more than 12 dogs, add $5.00 for each additional dog.

Late fee: Starting April 1, a $10.00 late fee is charged for each dog that is not licensed.

Buffalo County supports having an independently licensed and operated humane society for small animals. A large portion of dog license fees helps fund a humane society.
